How to Choose an Interior Designer in Pune: A Pune Owner's Guide

How to choose an interior designer in Pune — the BOQ checks, the reference visit and the three contract clauses that predict how a project will go.

Updated 12 October 2026

Figures are indicative 2026 ranges from our own Pune project pricing. They are not a quotation — a real number is tied to a drawing and a material list.

Pune has hundreds of interior designers, and almost none of the things that distinguish them are visible on an Instagram grid. What separates a good studio from a bad one is what happens after the contract is signed.

These are the checks that actually predict how a project will go.

Ask for the BOQ, not the mood board

A quotation with line items, brands and quantities is the single most reliable signal. A per-square-foot number with no specification behind it cannot be compared or enforced. Ask what carcass material, what hardware brand, how many drawers and whether electrical and false ceiling are included.

  • Carcass material and thickness
  • Hardware brand and model names
  • Drawer count versus shelf count
  • Whether false ceiling and electrical are included
  • Exclusion list in writing

Visit a completed project, not a show flat

A studio's own office tells you nothing. Ask to visit a project handed over at least a year earlier, and look specifically at how the hardware has held, whether shutters still align, and whether the client would use them again.

Check who supervises the site

Design and execution are different skills, and the failure mode is a beautiful drawing set with nobody checking it on site. Ask who attends site, how often, and whether that person is on the studio's payroll or a contractor.

Read the contract for three things

Payment schedule tied to milestones rather than dates, a variation clause that requires written approval before work proceeds, and a defined snag-closure period after handover. If any of the three is missing, the project will be resolved by negotiation instead of by the document.

Common questions

Should I choose the cheapest quote in Pune?
No. Two quotes for the same layout can differ by 40 percent in content — thinner plywood, unbranded hardware, fewer drawers, electrical excluded. Compare line items, not totals.
Do I need a designer if I already have a contractor?
A designer is worth it for the drawings and the material schedule even if you execute separately. Most cost overruns come from decisions made on site without a drawing, not from labour rates.
How do I verify a studio's work?
Ask for two client references from projects completed more than a year ago, and visit one. A studio that cannot produce a single reference from last year is telling you something.
